The Fourth of July is only a few days away, and if you still haven't decided what to make, how about a juicy, restaurant-style cheeseburger? In our family, cheeseburgers have become a Fourth of July tradition because what could be more American than a classic burger? Burgers are incredibly versatile, with endless combinations of spreads, toppings, sauces, and cheeses. Portobello mushrooms and blue cheese are my personal favorites. Adding portobello mushrooms to the meat helps create a juicy, flavorful burger, while blue cheese adds a rich and distinctive taste. If you don't like blue cheese, feel free to substitute your favorite cheese or leave it out entirely. If you want a perfectly juicy and delicious burger, follow these simple tips: 1. Dip the meat in cold water for about 30 seconds before grilling. This is a tip I found on Food & Wine. 2. Flip the burgers only once while grilling. 3. Avoid overcooking the meat, as this can make the burgers dry. 4. Brush the burgers with melted butter or oil while cooking for extra flavor and moisture. 5. Never flatten the burgers with a spatula while they are cooking, as this presses out the flavorful juices.  6. Always start with fresh, good-quality meat for the best flavor and texture.Use the structured ingredient and direction fields below for cooking. The recipe source is Delights of Culinaria.

  • Step 1

If you have a meat grinder, grind the meat with portobello mushroom. You can also cut the mushrooms into small diced pieces or use a blender to grind them.

  • Step 2

Mix meat, mushrooms, salt and pepper together.

  • Step 3

Form big 1 inch thick patties (apprx. 6-8 patties).

  • Step 4

If the meat is cold, let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling.

  • Step 5

For the first spread, combine equal amounts of ketchup, sweet dill relish, and mayonnaise.

  • Step 6

For the lemon garlic spread, combine mayonnaise, crushed garlic, Dijon mustard if using, and fresh lemon juice or white or red wine vinegar.

  • Step 7

Prepare your desired toppings: tomatoes, sliced onions, lettuce, avocado, bacon, sauteed mushrooms, dill pickles, jalapeños, and cheese.

  • Step 8

Brush the grill with oil or spray with nonstick.

  • Step 9

Dip each patty in cold water for 30 seconds, then brush it with melted butter or oil.

  • Step 10

Grill the burgers for 6-7 minutes on the first side. Do not flatten the burgers with a spatula.

  • Step 11

Flip the burgers only once and grill the second side for 6-7 minutes for medium-well, or until cooked to your preferred doneness.

  • Step 12

During the last 2 minutes of grilling, add a slice of cheese if desired.

  • Step 13

Set the meat aside and let it rest for 3-5 minutes.

  • Step 14

Toast the buns on the grill or in a pan. If desired, brush butter or oil on the sliced side of the bun.

  • Step 15

Add spread on one side of the bun, followed by desired toppings and the grilled patty.

  • Step 16

Burger patties can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the fridge until grilling. Let them sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before grilling.

  • Step 17

These burgers can also be pan grilled or fried with a little oil if you choose not to grill.
